Firsts!

Friday lunch time at work I popped down to Scarborough harbour, it coincided with high tide and I hoped to see a few Purple Sandpipers, 61 reported recently on a harbour wall.

No Purple sandpipers but thanks to Steve Race (See blogs I follow) for pointing out a first winter Little Gull (header shot) and likewise Kittiwake. I think the Black Headed Gull is, well I know an immature, also first winter?

A day of firsts?

First winter Kittiwake

Adult Kittiwake

Black Headed Gull

The light was difficult with bright sun, time too short but it was great to see these birds.

Hi Mike,
Have to agree with you about the Black Head, but I am sure the Kittiwake is an adult due to the yellow bill as the juv`s and first winters have a black bill. I am no expert though!
Lovely photos, I do like Kittiwakes, a bird that is having a rather bad time of it lately!

Thanks Bri.
John, you are of course right the later two shots are an adult kittiwake and the first two a first winter.
Thanks Roy, if you can get up to Scarborough we have plenty of Kittiwakes around the area.
